I've been playing Apex Legends since the first day release of Season 1 (although I skipped Season 7 and 8). With 10.2k career games under my belt, a lot of kills, and probably more deaths, I've learnt a thing or two about each Legend as I've explored the diverse roster.
By experiencing new mains you figure out how to utilise their abilities in conjunction with your own playstyle, not the other way around. They should supplement your playstyle. The passive, tactical, and ultimate doesn't and shouldn't bottleneck them into one specific playstyle, you have to be flexible!
That isn't to say that they have their innate strengths in certain situations however. Of course, Wattson or Caustic is going to be exceptionally better at anchoring a building than Octane or Revenant. Fuse and Bangalore are going to excel at area denial whereas Lifeline or Loba won't be so up to the challenge.
The composition of your team will also factor in to the dynamism of your playstyle perhaps, so be sure play around with fun and effective ultimate combos to get one up on the enemy team! The classic Horizon and Caustic ult combo is a personal favourite of mine.
Here is a brief but concise overview of each Legend and how I personally think they should be played:
Bloodhound is a Technological Tracker, and a Recon Legend. Their Passive: Tracker, allows Bloodhound to stalk it's foes by following their highlighted footsteps, the perfect ability for hunting down the remainder of injured squads. Bloodhound's Tactical: Eye of the Allfather scans in a cone shape, notifying your team of traps, fortifications, and hidden enemies. Bloodhound mostly suits an aggressive playstyle, especially when using their Ultimate: Beast of the Hunt meaning Bloodhound moves faster, with improved tracking, making them an effective flanker. Bloodhound is the idyllic entry fragger, the prime mover of a push whilst scanning ahead of the team to keep them updated. If you're after a strictly kill-focused team composition, Bloodhound could pair nicely with Wraith and Bangalore.
Gibraltar is a Shielded Fortress, and a Support Legend. His Passive: Gun Shield forms an energy shield that blocks incoming damage as Gibraltar aims down the sight. His Tactical: Dome of Protection is a literal lifesaver in heated firefights, protecting his allies from artillery barrages, gunfire, and grenades. Gibraltar is a defensive Legend at heart, so stay close to your teammates, support them with heavy gunfire, and use his dome shield to create cover in large, open plains to revive downed teammates. Gibraltar's Ultimate: Defensive Bombardment is a deadly orbital strike that can devastate whole squads if used correctly. Although Gibraltar can be a supportive Legend that can excel at defending a POI, his Ultimate can establish area denial or even be the preliminary move for a third party attack. If you are looking to defend POIs and last to the final ring, Gibraltar could be a nice fit alongside Fuse and Wattson.
Lifeline is a Combat Medic and a Support Legend. Lifeline is the single, dedicated healer in the whole of the Apex Legends roster (besides Conduit; perhaps). As a medic, you need to be glued to your teammates' hips - as you are supporting them. By using her Passive: Combat Medic and Tactical: D.O.C. Heal Drone, you can effortlessly revive your teammates and ensure they have full health. Lifeline's Ultimate: Care Package, will aid your team greatly as you reach the final circle, equipping you with the finest defensive gear and providing cover - or even trapping an enemy team within a building? Lifeline's makeup is that of a support at the end of the day, that is where you'll be getting the most out of her as a Legend. Lifeline fits into any squad due to how essential of a pick she is, but I reckon she would perform particularly well with Newcastle and Pathfinder; an ideal match-up for those looking for a squad that can react quickly to surprise attacks and ambushes.
Pathfinder is a Forward Scout and a Skirmisher Legend. For Pathfinder, scouting is paramount; using his Passive: Insider Knowledge to foresee future ring positions is going to give you an advantage to reach POIs and fortify them before enemy teams do. Pathfinder also excels at getting into and exiting firefights quickly with his Tactical: Grappling Hook and Ultimate: Zipline Gun. His ult can also ensure that you and your team can get to high places, camp on top of buildings, and get over difficult terrain like out of a Fuse ult or over a Catalyst ult. Sniping is also a bit of a no-brainer move with Pathfinder, but don't let that stop you from getting in close. Pathfinder could pair extremely well with Horizon and Vantage if you want to capitalise on the high ground and get a vantage point above your enemies.
Wraith is an Interdimensional Skirmisher and a Skirmisher Legend.
Bangalore is a Professional Soldier and an Assault Legend. Bangalore is perhaps one of the most versatile Legends in the whole roster - and an top pick for an entry fragger. Bangalore is innately aggressive but you can also play her defensively via area denial. Her Ultimate: Rolling Thunder can be used as a preliminary attack when you assault another team or can be used to push an enemy team from a sought-after POI. Bangalore's Tactical: Smoke Launcher can create a potential escape, act as mobile cover, cut off an enemy's line of sight, and can allow you to revive downed teammates - be sure to smoke enemy teams over smoking your own team. Equip your close-quarters weapons with a DT during your smoked attacks to give you an advantage. Bangalore's Passive: Double Team allows her to move around at an increased speed to get her out of sticky situations or to maintain the high momentum during an aggressive push. Pairing Bangalore with Octane and Bloodhound could result in an effective momentum-based flanking team.
Caustic is a Toxic Trapper and a Controller Legend. There are a few ways that you can play Caustic but for the most part he will be used for anchoring. Caustic requires a more defensive approach through zoning buildings with his Tactical: Nox Gas Traps, where he can place down six gas traps - which can damage enemies as well as alert him to whereabouts they are breaching from. As Caustic has a large hitbox, be sure to use cover when crossing large areas and follow your entry and secondary fragger so they can provide ample covering fire. Caustic is exceptionally useful during the final zone where his Ultimate: Nox Gas Grenade can really shine with DoT AoE damage perhaps being the slight advantage that can win it for your team in that last skirmish. For a solely fortification/trap-oriented team, pairing Caustic with Wattson and Catalyst could make for a fun team comp during the final zones.
Mirage is a Holographic Trickster and a Support Legend. Even though Mirage is a technically Support Legend, he has the flexibility to pick up different roles if your team is lacking. For this reason, it's important to be shape your playstyle to fill in the gaps in your team's composition. If you need a secondary fragger, use your Tactical: Psyche Out and create some off angles with those crafty bamboozles. If you wanting an entry fragger, use your Ultimate: Life of the Party when pushing a team, create some chaos, and pick off your confused opponents. If you're desperate for a support, use his Passive: Now You See Me so you can covertly revive your team, can cover yourself with a sneaky escape, and anchor up. Be creative when deploying your decoys, use them to distract, get an off angle, or even fool an enemy team into pushing out in the open. For a more balanced team able to switch their playstyle on a dime, Newcastle and Wraith could play nicely along Mirage's skillset.
Octane is a High-Speed Daredevil and a Skirmisher Legend. The archetypal entry fragger. Octane wants to be played aggressively and he wants to get in the enemy team's face. Having great movement is essential to truly exploit the full potential of Octane. Having insider knowledge in CQC situations is also going to give you a huge one up on your opponents - since this is where you're going to be for the most part as Octane. Octane's Tactical: Stim allows you to run four times faster than any other Legend, this gives you the advantage in being able to out-run, out-move, and out-strafe your opponents in close 1v1 standoffs. Octane's Ultimate: Launch Pad can be a useful tool when avoiding enemy ultimates, reaching the high ground, or getting into the zone in the nick of time. For a full-blown aggressive team comp, Bangalore and Wraith would make for a threatening team.
Wattson is a Static Defender and a Controller Legend.
Crypto is a Surveillance Expert and a Recon Legend. Crypto is a unique Legend that really shines toward late-game as Crypto can position the team accordingly to where teams are playing/versus not playing. His Ultimate: Drone EMP can be an effective tool in a skilled Crypto's hands - timing is critical. It can be a crucial move to prime a push by breaking the enemy team's shields, leaving less work to do for when your team pushes in and finished the job. Crypto is played less and less in competitive mode as he is quite situational and does take a lot of time to master, but that shouldn't dissuade you from picking Crypto as your main. Intel-gathering gives you a huge boost as a team if you know how to utilise it. Knowing who you're going up against, how many people in the enemy squad, and where they are positioned will greatly benefit you and your tearm when deciding your next move and position. Crypto paired with Octane and Bloodhound could provide a balanced team capable of intel-gathering. , tracking, and aggression.
Revenant is a Synthetic Nightmare and a Skirmisher Legend. Revenant is a top pick for secondary fragger material due to his off-angling abilities. Revenant does thrive at flanking and splitting off from your team to create weak points in the enemy team/cut them off from one another. It's a risky tactic if you're not up to the challenge. A team comprised of Revenant, Ash, and Horizon could be especially apt at flanking enemies and getting the jump on enemy teams on top of tall buildings.
Loba is a Translocating Thief and a Support Legend. Although Loba is a Support Legend she fits quite nicely in the secondary fragger role. Loba's Tactical: Burglar's Best Friend is perfect for off-angling enemy teams and being aggressive and acts as a mobility ability to escape a dicey skirmish. Loba is a flexible Legend that can excel as flanking enemy teams and picking off isolated enemies, as well as supporting her team and sustaining your damage all the way to the end game. Loba's Passive: Eye for Quality and Ultimate: Black Market Boutique ensures your team is equipped with high tier armour, their loadouts equipped with rare attachments, and that they have an ample amount of ammunition if you decide to anchor a POI in a final zone. Vantage and Wattson could be a nice fit alongside Loba for anchoring an area in the final zone whilst staying replenished and putting out enough damage.
Rampart is an Amped Modder and a Controller Legend. A Support Legend at heart, Rampart thrives by playing around her Tactical: Amped Cover. Her amped walls allow her to create choke points, poke behind her walls, provide cover for a downed teammate, and dish out some impressive damage. Distancing yourself from enemies to mid-long range is going to critical in staying alive as Rampart struggles to outmaneuver herself out of sticky situations. Stay close enough to your team and support your entry fragger and secondary fragger with precise and continuous firepower. Rampart's Ultimate: Emplaced Minigun "Sheila" is a devastating weapon and can mow down entire squads when used correctly - be sure to spring a trap or ambush with Rampart. Pair Rampart with Newcastle and Caustic for a team that excels at creating and holding choke points.
Horizon is a Gravitational Manipulator and a Skirmisher Legend. Horizon's Tactical: Gravity Lift is a huge accessory to Horizon's kit and it will determine how you and your team handle sticky situations. Taking and playing the high ground is where Horizon thrives, and can very much factor in how far you and your team go during a match. Horizon is quite a straight-forward Legend and has a strong, versatile kit. Her Ultimate: Black Hole can be used with vicious efficacy when used with a Caustic or Gibraltar ultimate to pull in an entire team and break their shields under one swift move. Playing and holding the high ground is a critical point in any match, ensure your team is up to the task. Pair Horizon alongside Wattson and Caustic to secure a vantage point and hold it out till the final zone.
Fuse is a Bombastic Explosives Expert and an Assault Legend. Fuse is undoubtably an aggressive Legend and an excellent secondary fragger to support your entry fragger from a distance. Fuse excels at peppering enemy teams with his Tactical: Knuckle Duster for area denial, extra damage, and to boost your EVO Shield. Fuse's Passive: Grenadier is extremely useful for end game where you can nade spam enemies in the final ring or for throwing projectiles at enemy teams that are out of your reach with improved precision. Fuse's Ultimate: Motherlode is perfect for area denial or trapping teams in a confined area, perhaps even to deny care package loot from an enemy team. For a team comp focused solely on AoE and damaging multiple enemies at once, try pairing Caustic and Horizon with Fuse.
Valkyrie is a Winged Avenger and a Skirmisher Legend.
Seer is an Ambush Artist and a Recon Legend.
Ash is an Incisive Instigator and a Assault Legend. Ash suits both the entry fragger and secondary fragger role, perhaps leaning more toward the secondary fragger position with her skillset. Ash should be used to solely focus on individual enemies with her off-angling potential (and her lack of an AoE tactical or ultimate). Ash feels like a blend between an Assault Legend and a Skirmisher Legend, which makes her a versatile pick for any team. Her tactical is ideal for third-partying weakened enemies that are attempting to rotate and heal up, and she can excel in catching enemies off guard. Ash's Ultimate: Phase Breach allows her team to get to a beneficial vantage point quickly or to retreat out of a dangerous crossfire. Ash could prove a viable pick alongside Revenant and Crypto when creating a team comp focused on pushing unsuspecting teams and third-partying.
Mad Maggie is a Rebel Warlord and an Assault Legend. Mad Maggie makes for an aggressive secondary fragger, you want to be close by to your entry fragger to make quick work of weakened enemies and get the jump on unsuspecting teams. Momentum is key. Throwing her Ultimate: Wrecking Ball to initiate momentum and establish an aggressive push is going to put the enemy team on their back legs and hopefully startle them. Mad Maggie's Tactical: Riot Drill destroys fortifications like Gibraltar's dome shield, negates covers, and can ensure a fight never becomes stagnant or slowed. Her Passive: Warlord's Ire allows her to chase fleeing enemies with increased speed and trim their health with whilst holding a shotgun. Mad Maggie's abilities make her top pick for a team based on aggression and pushing, especially alongside Fuse and Valkyrie.
Newcastle is a Mobile Guardian and a Support Legend. Newcastle is a very strong support character in a lot of different situations; who unfortunately doesn't get enough credit. Newcastle's Ultimate: Castle Wall allows him to take extreme off angles, allowing him to play aggressively or even as a solo. Newcastle's strengths however lie in him being able to safely revive him teammates under heavy fire and move them to cover through his Passive: Retrieve the Wounded. His Tactical: Mobile Shield gives him and his team the flexibility and freedom, using it as mobile cover for an aggressive push, or to output a staunch defense against a tenacious team. Newcastle would nestle in nicely in a myriad of team comps - try pairing him with Bangalore and Valkyrie for a versatile team, able to quickyl switch their playstyle when pressured.
Vantage is a Sniper Savant and a Recon Legend.
Catalyst is a Defensive Conjurer and a Controller Legend. Catalyst stands out from the other Controller Legends with her penchant for funneling enemies. Catalyst thrives in creating difficult situations for the enemy team through barricading doors, setting spikes, and creating walls and cover. Her Ultimate: Dark Veil can be used as a supportive tool or a deadly weapon. The versatility of her Ultimate ability makes Catalyst a valuable member of any team - by establishing cover, cutting off an enemy team, preventing a third party assault, covering your escape... there's really an abundance of ways that you can use Dark Veil to your advantage. Catalyst teamed up with Bangalore and Horizon makes for a well-rounded team comp that can act on the dime and be prepared for any type of tricky situation.
Ballistic is a Refined Gunslinger and an Assault Legend. His Passive: Sling, is extremely helpful, especially when you are aggressively pushing an enemy team. Use a close quarters weapon like the RE45 or the R99 to have in your Sling so when you activate your ult and push, you have a fully-kitted out SMG. His Tactical: Whistler, shoots a projectile that heats up an enemy's gun and can cause damage is overheated. This is such a great tactical to use where you are outnumbered and you want to quickly and temporarily remove one enemy from the fight. Make sure to scan your enemies before they get behind cover and angle your Whistler to the left or right so the projectile can curve around the cover. Ballistic's Ultimate: Tempest is a thing of beauty. Not only does it give you AND your team faster reloads, faster armed move speed, and infinite ammo, but Ballistic's sling weapon is upgraded to gold. This is a deadly ultimate to use (and even go up against), so make sure your timing is right, your teammates are close by, and your aim is precise. Ballistic's naturally aggressive moveset makes him a perfect fit alongside Wraith and Bangalore (especially with her Rolling Thunder ult as the primary attack).
Conduit is a Shield Healer and a Support Legend.
